Undercounter ice makers and ice machine require routine cleaning to keep them running. I have had customers that run a clean cycle on their machine but without the proper solution, therefore there was no actual ‘cleaning’ taking place. For my personal ice maker, and my customers units, I use Hydro Balance H.B. 30. It is a nickel safe, fast acting, and non-foaming solution that removes slime and scale buildup and restores efficiency of ice machines.

Per KitchAid, “it is recommended that you clean the ice Maker when the “Cleaning Cycle” button is illuminated or after 9 months has elapsed.  Mineral that are removed from water during the freezing cycle will eventually form a hard scaly deposit in the water system.  Cleaning the system regularly helps remove the mineral scale buildup.  How often you need to clean the system depends on upon how hard your water is, you may need to clean the system as often as every 6 months.”

I have been using Hydro Balance H.B. 30 for years with great results at removing hard water mineral scale buildup. In addition to running the proper solution during a ‘clean cycle’ I also clean the condenser coils at the same time. It is equally important to not over look cleaning the condenser coils to keep the system running efficiently.

Combating stubborn stains in your refrigerator

Sometimes stains inside your refrigerator can be stubborn. There’s a safe natural way to help you fight the battle of removing stubborn stains, plus you may have what you need handy in your home already! Baking Soda is your savior. Mix baking soda with a little water to produce a thick paste, then apply it to the stain and let it sit for an hour. Next wipe away with a damp cloth or sponge.

Refrigerator coils are happiest when clean

Most of us have heard the term “out of sight, out of mind.” Well, typically most refrigerators, ice machines, and beverage coolers have condenser coils that are out of sight, there for are usually out of mind. Even though they are physically out of sight the extra energy consumption on your electric bill is not!

Condenser coils must remain clean to efficiently dissipate heat. Therefore the refrigeration system has to work harder (longer) to keep things cool, which adds to energy consumption. Not only does it cost more to run an appliance with a dirty condenser but it adds more wear and tear due to longer run times which shortens the life of the product.

In some severe cases the appliance may stop cooling properly resulting in higher than normal temperatures which if left unnoticed could result in food loss. Routine cleaning of the condenser coils help your refrigeration appliance cost less to run and lessens premature failure of components, plus no loss of food! Most user manuals will explain how to clean your coils or a quick search online will show you how to as well.
